Artist's Statement

For me, the creative process has always been one of continuous search and discovery. There’s that moment when something unique begins to emerge. Though I may start with a specific idea in mind, the end result always seems to be a combination of what I intended to happen and that unexpected something that seems to happen all on its own.

I’ve always been fascinated with the human figure. To me, it’s the most exciting and expressive subject there is. There’s just no end to the subtle range of moods and feelings that can be expressed in a delicate hand gesture, an arched eyebrow, or a mischievous grin.

I’ve been greatly influenced by comic books, cartoons, and animation, which is evident in the brightly colored, exaggerated style that I use. Humor has also played an essential role in my work for a long time. My use of ambiguous spatial relationships, distorted anatomy, and dream-like imagery also reveal my influences from art history, particularly the work of the Cubists, Expressionists, and Surrealists.

My desire is that every image I produce serves as a window into another world—a world that’s strange, yet somehow familiar—a world populated by wonderfully odd characters who seem to remind us a little of ourselves. Ultimately it’s the viewer who completes each piece by bringing to it their own unique set of perceptions and interpretations.
